How to Pray When You Can't Sleep
How to Pray When You Can't Sleep
Sleeplessness can make prayer feel complicated. You may be tired, frustrated, restless, or worried about how tomorrow will feel if you do not rest.
When you cannot sleep, prayer does not need to be long. It can be a quiet turning toward God from exactly where you are.
Begin Without Pressure
Start with the truth:
God, I am awake, tired, and restless. Meet me here.
This is a real prayer. You do not need to explain everything before God will listen.
Release the Need to Fix the Night
Sometimes the pressure to fall asleep makes sleep even harder. Prayer can help you stop trying to control the night.
Try this:
Lord, I receive this moment from you. I ask for rest, but I also trust you if rest comes slowly.
The goal is not to force a feeling. The goal is to place yourself in God's care.
Pray Through Psalm 4:8
Read slowly:
"In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety."
Then pray:
God, help me lie down in peace. Teach my body and mind that I am held by you.
Keep a Small Night Journal
If a worry keeps circling, write one sentence:
Tomorrow I can return to this. Tonight I place it before God.
Writing the thought down can help you stop rehearsing it internally.
