How to Meditate on Scripture
How to Meditate on Scripture
Meditating on Scripture simply means staying with God's Word long enough to receive it slowly.
You do not need special training. You need a short passage, a few quiet minutes, and a willingness to listen.
Step 1: Choose a Short Passage
Start with one verse or a few lines. Long passages can be meaningful, but short passages are easier to carry with you.
Good places to begin:
- Psalm 46:10
- Psalm 23:1
- Matthew 11:28
- Philippians 4:6-7
- 1 Peter 5:7
Step 2: Read Slowly
Read the passage once. Then read it again more slowly.
Ask:
- What word stands out?
- What phrase feels important today?
- What does this passage invite me to pray?
Step 3: Pause
Do not rush to explain the verse. Sit with it. Let it speak before you try to organize your thoughts.
This pause is part of meditation.
Step 4: Pray the Passage
Turn the words into prayer.
If you read "The Lord is my shepherd," you might pray:
Lord, shepherd me today. Lead me where I cannot lead myself.
Step 5: Carry One Phrase
Choose one phrase to remember during the day:
- Be still
- The Lord is my shepherd
- He cares for you
- Peace of God
Return to it when your attention scatters.
